The Hearthstone meta is in quite some trouble as just three archetypes, Whirlkick Rogue, Evolve Shaman, and Enrage Warrior take up about a third of all games played. Especially in High-legend the Tri-fecta of Warrior, Shaman and Rogue take up about 2/3’s of the time. Balance changes seem inevitable as the meta reaches one of the stalest states in recent time. Hearthstone Designer Iksar, confirmed earlier this week that when the team arrived back to the offices after their holiday break, the first thing on the schedule was talks of a balance patch.

Enrage Warrior continues its reign as the standout Warrior archetype. According to our data Enrage Warrior qualifies as the most common, and most successful archetype in the Warrior class. One of the best popular versions reaching 58.7% winrate in 150 games. One reason for Warrior’s rise in popularity is the strength of the archetype against the Evolve Shaman and Rogue archetypes, both of which it keeps its own against well in its current form.

The novelty of Clown and C’thun Druid wear off as the archetypes continue their fall in popularity. However, some players are finding new ways to revitalize the Malygos Druid deck for the current meta. How the popularity of the Malygos Druid deck continues in the coming weeks is something worth keeping an eye on. Due to the rumors surrounding the upcoming balance changes, Druid may well become a top contender once again.

Secret Mage sees a drastic increase in play the past 2 weeks, despite the somewhat lackluster results. Both the Highlander and Secret Mage archetypes struggle in the middle of the pack of the current Standard Hearthstone meta, patiently waiting for their chance to shine. Highlander mage does see a 53.8% winrate in over 200 games so I suggest to keep an eye on it.

Since the latest balance patch, many Priest enthusiasts shifted their focus to the flexibility of Highlander Priest to better suit their matchups against decks like Evolve Shaman, although it has not been a top meta contender thus far. Whether Control and Galakrond Priest make their return in the future is tough to say, but for now those archetypes continue to struggle.

Gul’dan gained a significant number of new followers of the Warlock class since last update. With almost double the number of recorded games on the Warlock class, many players see Warlock as the next opportunity to fight off the current top three decks. While Zoo Warlock remains less popular than Galakrond Warlock, the numbers suggest the former is worth more exploration.

Hunter honestly continues to struggle. The “new” Deathrattle Hunter archetype is showing some initial promise, but it is tough to be a fan of Rexxar right now in Hearthstone.
Datadecks Infographic: Avg. Deck Dust Cost & Avg. Game Time by Archetype.
Despite nerf after nerf, Demon Hunter just won’t die. One major factor for this, is the incredibly low dust-cost to try the new class. Since most of the required cards are obtained through the Demon Hunter prologue there are a lot of people testing to quickly solve the next best lists.
The lifesteal/OTK build is regarded by most as the “best” Demon Hunter deck available currently, despite its lesser recorded winrate. The situation comes up quite often where many players trying to learn a more complicated deck reducing the overall winrate of an archetype, despite it performing far better for the best players of the deck.

Paladin continues to fill its role as the consistent, simple class. It doesn’t stand out in any major way, but does what it wants to do, well enough. The most common deck, Highlander Paladin took the recent meta by storm as not two weeks ago barely anyone played the archetype. With an already impressive winrate, we look forward to seeing how the new Highlander Paladin archetype develops until it inevitably is lost with this years new expansion.
Datadecks Infographic: Avg. Deck Dust Cost & Avg. Game Time by Archetype.
Rogue continues its reign of terror, taking over almost a third of all top-legend games. The Whirlkick Rogue archetype is simply too strong, and is likely to see changes in the coming weeks. Take advantage while you can, because these levels of play-rates and success are sure to result in Blizzard arriving with a nerf-bat.
Datadecks Infographic: Avg. Deck Dust Cost & Avg. Game Time by Archetype.
Alongside Warrior & Rogue, the remaining top-performer is Shaman. With its two close builds of the Evolve Shaman archetype, the class is simply everywhere. Surprisingly, most players seem to ask more for a nerf to Shaman, than to the aforementioned Rogue archetypes. One reason for that is how bad it feels to lose to the perceived randomness of Evolve as a mechanic. The bad feeling alongside the lack of a true counter to the class make for a disappointing experience playing Hearthstone for many players.
The categorization was done primarily by categorizing the decks based on the number of core cards they had of an archetype. The HSreplay API works by pulling the core cards per archetype. If a deck has fewer than six core cards, it will resort to manual categorization based on certain cards included in the deck. Deck categorization was never the intended use for the API. However, implementing it this way works decently well. After the decks are categorized this way, they are remapped based on similarity to other decks in other archetypes. The functional categorization may lead to a handful of decks appearing in a different category than they should be, but the overwhelming majority is classified correctly. This way, it is done to keep maintenance costs low and still achieve a meta snapshot with sufficient quality for our readers. The decks not featured in this report still count for the class infographics and are classified based on either very strict similarity to the successful decks of that archetype or, if none are present, classified based on manual categorization.

Shaman
Shaman DataDecks Infographic
Shaman DataDecks Infographic
Alongside Warrior & Rogue, the remaining top-performer is Shaman. With its two close builds of the Evolve Shaman archetype, the class is simply everywhere. Surprisingly, most players seem to ask more for a nerf to Shaman, than to the aforementioned Rogue archetypes. One reason for that is how bad it feels to lose to the perceived randomness of Evolve as a mechanic. The bad feeling alongside the lack of a true counter to the class make for a disappointing experience playing Hearthstone for many players.

Categorization
